Event description
A creative movement workshop where you will explore how you move and how to move with others in a playful, inclusive environment.

About this Event

Dancing in circles, dancing in lines. Similar patterns can be seen in folk dances across cultures. This workshop will explore traditional patterns; whilst moving in less traditional ways. How can we be in sync whilst simultaneously being ourselves?

The same constellations of movement have been used again and again to achieve collective joy. Can these dangerous dances be used to playfully overthrow existing order? This workshop is the beginning of an ongoing research project as to how the history of group ritual and dancing crowds can be made relevant for a contemporary community dance practice.

Join Kirsty Purnell, community dance practitioner, to take part in a creative movement workshop where you will explore how you move and how to move with others in a playful, inclusive environment.

This workshop is open to anyone 16+ (no age limit!). No prior movement experience is necessary just a willingness to get involved and collaborate. Please wear clothes you can move in.

The movement in this workshop will be creatively documented in collaboration with the artist Kate Ducker.

It will take place indoors on the 'Regal Court' at Black Prince Trust, Lambeth.

This workshop is organised by Kirsty Purnell and F.A.T. Studio. It has been made possible thanks to the generosity of our friends at the Black Prince Trust.

F.A.T. Studio is a newly formed, artist-led Community Interest Company, which is running a 'Public Art & Design Studio' at AMP Gallery in Peckham throughout the month of November 2019. The Circle Dance is one of many public activities that'll have been programmed to take place during this time. Visit out website for more information.

The Black Prince Trust was established in 2011 when the London Borough of Lambeth designated a 2.5-acre site on the Old Lillian Baylis School as a Community Hub.

The site sits at the heart of the Ethelred Estate in Kennington, which is home to close to 4000 residents in one of the most deprived boroughs in London. Lambeth and the Trust had a common vision to offer first-class sports and education facilities to the local community and schools.

The Trust works in partnership with a number of commercial and charitable stakeholders to deliver sessions and programmes for the community – many of which are free at the point of use.
