Description

This study day explores the impact and influence of the Civic Gospel on education in nineteenth-century Birmingham. The day will feature talks on George Dawson by Professor Ewan Fernie (Shakespeare Institute) and the Birmingham Municipal School of Art by Dr Sally Hoban. Dan Wale, and Dr Ian Cawood of Newman University will also be discussing aspects of education during the period. The programme for the day will be as follows:

10 – 10.30am:

Introduction by Dr Malcolm Dick, Director of the Centre for West Midlands History

10.40 – 11.40am:
Dr Sally Hoban – Art into Industry: The Birmingham Municipal School of Art and the Civic Gospel

What is the extent of your knowledge and involvement in the city’s history and heritage? Professor Ewan Fernie (Shakespeare Institute) and Tom Epps (Library of Birmingham) will be holding a discussion session for you to have your say! Your opinions will help contribute to an exciting heritage project focused around George Dawson and the Shakespeare Library.
