18.02.19: DIY SOAP AND WAX WRAP WORKSHOP
Our interactive zero waste workshops facilitate the making of simple zero waste products which can be easily replicated at home once you have learnt the basics! In this session you will learn how to make your own soap using the 'melt and pour' method and make your own bees wax wrap (vegan option with soya wax is available on request). A fun, fulfilling, learning experience that requires no previous knowledge/skills.
Why use soap over liquid shower gels?
Firstly, it requires about 5 times more energy to produce liquid soaps (which are essentially synthetic detergents) than the humble soap bar and it generally comes with around 20 times more packaging - more specifically plastic packaging (unless you are buying in bulk); you can also learn to make your own soap bars and have them package free! Also, don't forget you are paying for the extra water content when buying liquid shower gel, which in turn means there is a higher carbon footprint due to the heavier transportation. Finally, once it's your the bathroom, you are likely to use seven times more per wash than a soap bar due to the habit of squeezing more than we need! So let's try and cut down on this easily avoidable environmental damage and make your own, not to mention, it is much kinder on your skin.
We will be using the melt and pour process with a clear SLS free base and customizing two soaps with natural ingredients such as oats, coffee, rosemary, poppy seeds (...the list goes on) and adding essential oils known for their natural fragrances and health benefits such as eucalyptus, lemon, tea tree etc. Imagine... we have a shop full of ingredients so the possibilities are endless! We will be explaining the benefits of adding certain natural products and oils to you on the night that is suitable for your requirements and besides that, they make them look beautiful too!
Why use wax wraps over cling film?
Well it’s a no brainer really...more than 1.2 billion metres, equating to 745,000 miles, of cling film is used by households across Britain every year – that’s enough to go around the circumference of the world over 30 times! Imagine the amount that this, easily replaceable material, is adding to plastic pollution; not to mention the concerns of plastic on human health, with chemicals from plastic leaching into our food!
Beeswax is naturally antibacterial (with soya wraps we use jojoba oil instead for this benefit), we also add jojoba oil and pine resin to give it its extra stickiness! Simply mould over items you want to wrap - just like cling film!
We will be demonstrating how to make the winning recipe for beeswax and soya wax wraps and you will be cutting and applying it on your own lovely piece of 100% cotton fabric (there will be various designs to choose from). You may choose from is one large wax wrap (35cm x 35cm) or a medium and small (31cm x 31cm and 18cm x 18cm)
Achieving a zero waste lifestyle is, of course, a long journey but small steps like changing your shower gel for soap and using wax wraps instead of cling film, is a step in the right direction!
In addition we will offer a complimentary loose leaf tea break and you will be provided with all the equipment and materials and some of our local, taster nibbles! You will be able to take home: one medium and one small custom handmade soap and one large wax wrap or a medium and small.
