The climate crisis and refugees

How is the climate crisis affecting displacement? What are the legal implications? What actions can we take and what campaigns can we get involved in?

Join this event to hear from experts approaching the topic of climate and refugees from three different angles.

• Aparna Mehrotra is a lawyer from India. She previously worked as a Law Clerk at the Supreme Court of India and is currently a Research Assistant for the Sundarbans Climate Justice Project at the King's Legal Clinic. This partnership looks at the impact of climate change on traditional communities in India and Bangladesh and whether large international investors are doing enough to assess the impact on human rights and provide remedies.

• Ria Patel is the founder of the KCL Undoing Borders campaign, Co-Chair of LGBTIQA+ Greens, Trustee at People & Planet, and Fairfield Councillor in Croydon. Ria is passionate about politics and intersectional social and environmental justice.
• Rachel Harrington-Abrams is a PhD student in the Department of Geography at King's. Rachel's doctoral research focuses on the complex multilateralism of adaptation and loss and damage governance, including how constructed discourses, epistemic actors, and funding inform and impact decision-making processes within national governments on the use of planned relocation and managed retreat policies.

The session will be chaired by Sue Willman who is the Chair of the Law Society Human Rights Committee and Assistant Director of King's Legal Clinic.

Each speaker will offer a 10-minute presentation, followed by a 20-minute discussion and Q&A.

This event is part of Refugee Week and London Climate Action Week.
