Asif Ahmad CMG British High Commissioner to Jamaica and the Bahamas

The High Commissioner is the UK government’s representative in a Commonwealth nation. They are responsible for the direction and work of the High Commission and its Deputy High Commissions and/or Consulates, including political work, trade and investment, press and cultural relations, and visa and consular services. Ruth Lea CBE

Ruth has been Economic Adviser of the Arbuthnot Banking Group PLC since 2007 and was an independent non-executive director (from 2005 to 2016). She is the author of many papers and articles on economic issues.

She co-founded Global Vision in 2007 and was Director until 2010, and was previously the Director of the Centre for Policy Studies (from 2004 to 2007), Head of the Policy Unit at the Institute of Directors (from 1995 to 2003) and Economics Editor at ITN (from 1994 to 1995). Prior to ITN she was Chief UK Economist at Lehman Brothers, Chief Economist at Mitsubishi Bank, worked for 16 years in the Civil Service (the Treasury, the DTI, the Civil Service College and the Central Statistical Office) and was an economics lecturer at Thames Polytechnic (now the University of Greenwich).

She has served on the Councils of London University and the Royal Economic Society, the National Consumer Council, the Nurses’ Pay Review Body, the ONS Statistics Advisory Committee, the ESRC Research Priorities Board, the Retail Prices Advisory Committee and the IEA’s Shadow Monetary Policy Committee. She has also been a judge for several national achievement awards and was a Governor of the London School of Economics. She is currently a member of the DIT’s Committee of Experts and a Trustee of the Global Warming Policy Foundation.

She read economics and statistics at York and Bristol Universities and attended Lymm Grammar School in Cheshire.

Her interests include music and philately and she has recently had a major book published entitled “Stamps as witnesses of history".
