Title: The Connected Curriculum

Presenter: Dr. Jenny Griffiths (University College London)

Venue: Please report to DCQE Staff Development Room, First Floor (Mercantile House) for registration.

Jenny Griffiths is a Principal Teaching Fellow in the UCL Arena Centre for Research-based Education. She is leading institution-wide Assessment and Feedback initiatives that translate the core principles of the Connected Curriculum into tangible practice across the institution. Prior to this, she was Director of Postgraduate Taught Programme Transformation within the UCL Faculty of Engineering Sciences, overseeing the development of Masters teaching for over 1500 postgraduate students per year.

Before moving into curriculum development, Jenny’s disciplinary home was Medical Physics & Biomedical Engineering, and she has a PhD in Medical Radiation Physics. Her education research interests are in postgraduate student experience and education, and implementation of authentic assessment within a research-intensive academic setting.

Jenny is a Senior Fellow of the HEA and has a passion for communication and outreach, having presented Biomedical Engineering to audiences ranging from primary school children through to the University of the Third Age.

This session covers the following:

The Connected Curriculum is UCL’s transformative framework for education design in a research-intensive institution [Fung, Dilly. 2017.  A Connected Curriculum for Higher Education. London: UCL Press Free download:  https://www.ucl.ac.uk/ucl-press/browse-books/a-connected-curriculum-for-higher-education]. The framework encourages educators to explore the nature of evidence and knowledge production in their discipline, and then to invite students at all levels of study to learn through engaging them in research practice to build connections between disciplines, years of study, staff and students.

This three-hour workshop will discuss the core principles of the Connected Curriculum. Participants will then be encouraged to consider current areas of good practice that reflect the framework, and ideas for future change to shape their curriculum design and delivery to create a Connected Curriculum.
