RARE SCREENING OF A STONE COLD CLASSIC! ON 16MM NO LESS!!! + rare Shirley Clarke short film
The first commercial film set in Harlem, The Cool World opened at the Venice Film Festival in 1963. Inspired by Rossellini’s Rome, Open City, Clarke developed a radio mic for The Cool World so she could film the action on the streets. The film is mixture of fiction and documentary footage shot in a cinéma vérité style, and features a soundtrack by Dizzy Gillespie. Carl Lee adapted the story from Warren Miller’s original novel, which had been praised by James Baldwin as “one of the finest novels about Harlem that had ever come my way”. The Cool World centres on a gang in Harlem, The Royal Pythons and its leader, 14 year old Duke Custis, as he attempts to survive the oppressive cycles and violent expectations of his environment.
