What is the cost of free speech?
The contract between artist and audience; between artist and institution; between nation states; and between the individual and society at large are currently being challenged. This is a time of significant social and political turbulence in the world, the obligations – explicit or implied – which we have towards each other are being called into question, re-negotiated and re-written.
The theme of this years Venice Agendas is The Contract. In the current political and social climate the lines between fiction and non-fiction, propaganda and fake news has become blurred. Contracts, whether written or spoken, are promises and agreements that we make with each other, within our communities and across society in general.
