Guest talks:

"Shifting Emphases in 'Cities of Culture' Programmes: Glasgow 1990/Hull 2017"

by Dr Kevin Milburn (KCL)

"The Fine Art of Global City Creation"

by Dr Andrew Harris (UCL)

We are happy to announce the 4th public event of our Doctoral Network “Culture, Heritage and Beyond” organised by the Ph.D. students of the UCL Institute for Sustainable Heritage. In this bottom up guest lecture, we will be hosting Dr Kevin Milburn, Teaching Fellow at the 'Culture, Media and Creative Industries' Department of King's College who will take a comparative angle exploring the experience of Glasgow in 1990 as a city of culture to the modern experience of Hull, city of culture in 2017.

For the second part of the session, we are delighted to host Dr Andrew Harris, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Geography of Univesity College London. Andrew will also talk about the cultural relationships of mega-cities and will explore how the commodification of the artist’s cultural assets displaces the original artist/gentrifier.

A Q&A session will follow each talk and wine and light refreshments will be served.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

More on our speakers:

Dr Kevin Milburn, Teaching Fellow at the 'Culture, Media and Creative Industries' Department of King's College

Kevin Milburn joined CMCI in September 2015. Prior to this he was a Human Geography Teaching Fellow at the University of Hull for two years where he led the Imaging Place and Cultural and Historical Geography modules. This followed on from leading the Auditory Cultures module in the Department of Culture, Film and Media at the University of Nottingham and being a Research Fellow on two AHRC funded projects in the Department of Geography at the University of Exeter. He is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a graduate of the BFI/ICO’s Cultural Cinema Exhibition course. Much of Kevin’s research is currently focussed on: creativity in cities and ‘Cities of Culture’; North American popular culture and, in particular, its relationship to the social and physical landscape; and the expression of place, identity and belonging through cultural practices and how this affects, and is affected by, regimes of power.
