Description

The Event:
The Cricketer is delighted to invite you to our latest live event, this time in the company of former England, Yorkshire and Essex fast bowler Darren Gough.

As, arguably, England’s finest fast bowler since Bob Willis, Gough was the spearhead of his country’s attack for a decade, with 229 wickets in his 58 Tests. While not blessed with the frame of the majority of out-and-out quick bowlers, there can have been few cricketers with bigger hearts than 'Rhino' – so called because, to use his words, “I’m as strong as an ox!”

Seemingly on willpower and force of personality alone, Gough would take key wickets and manufacture match-winning spells with a mixture of pace, yorkers, bouncers and reverse swing. England’s sparse victories during the 1990s often had Goughie in the centre of them somewhere, while he was instrumental in their resurgence in the 2000s, with talismanic performances in the challenging conditions of Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Darren was also arguably England's finest white-ball bowler of all time, having taken 235 ODI wickets at 26.42, many with his unerringly acturate yorkers.

Do join us in London on July 18th and hear Darren in conversation with the editor of The Cricketer, Simon Hughes. Topics which might be covered include:

  • Darren's reflections of his career and his personal highlights: his heroic 6-42 against South Africa on his home ground in 1998 and his hat-trick at the SCG in 1999 come to mind

  • Listen to him delve into some of the finer points of his career. Was his relationship with Andy Caddick as fractious as portrayed? How did the genesis of English reverse swing come about in his partnership at Yorkshire with Craig White?

  • His memories of county cricket, including a County Championship with Yorkshire in 2001, his two-year spell at Essex from 2004, before returning to the White Rose for two years as captain

  • Ask your own questions…Who was his most-prized scalp? Which Englnad captain did he most enjoy playing for? How does he think he’d have fared as a death bowler in T20? His life after cricket?

Please do join us for what should be a wonderful evening - but please note tickets are strictly limited - so book now to avoid disappointment.
