Description

The Event:
The Cricketer is delighted to invite you to our latest live event, this time in the company of former England captain Michael Atherton.

Athers played 115 Tests for England in a career which spanned the entire 1990s. Famously earmarked “FEC” (Future England Captain) from a young age, he went on to fulfil that destiny, captaining his country a (then) record 54 times. In retirement he has enjoyed a distinguished career in the media, on TV first at Channel 4 and now at Sky and in print, as the Times’ cricket correspondent – a position he has held since 2008. He is one of the most respected and authoritative voices on the game.

The 1990s was certainly not one of the easiest decades to endure for English cricket fans, but it was Atherton's guts and determination at the top of the order that provided some of the rare highlights. His stubborn defiance at Johannesburg in 1995, batting for over 10 hours to save the Test with 185*, and his legendary stand-off with Allan Donald at Trent Bridge in 1998, were among the most iconic episodes of the era.

Do join us in London on May 23rd and hear Michael in conversation with the editor of The Cricketer, Simon Hughes. Topics which might be covered include::

  • His memories as a player – his finest achievements, any regrets (being run out on 99 at Lord’s?, the dirt-in-the pocket affair?), his recollections of leadership in the 1990s, his most satisfying victory as captain?

  • Memories of his duels with some of his chief tormentors: Glenn McGrath…Curtly Ambrose…Courtney Walsh. Who did he regard as his arch nemesis?

  • His transition into the media – did he find the switch easy and does he take the same satisfaction from writing and broadcasting as he did from playing?

  • Pose your own questions… How does he evaluate the current England side? Where does he see Test and county cricket in 10 years’ time? Does he feel positive about the governance of the game?

Please do join us for what should be a wonderful evening - but please note tickets are strictly limited - so book now to avoid disappointment.
