Description

The Event:
The Cricketer is delighted to invite you to our first live event of 2018 – an evening in the company of Mike Brearley. Regarded by many as England’s finest captain, and voted as such by readers of The Cricketer in 2016, Brearley won 18 and lost only four of his 31 Tests in charge. Bringing his psychoanalytic skills to bear as a skipper, Mike Brearley was famously described as having “a degree in people” and was at the helm for three Ashes series victories and three County Championships with Middlesex. Brearley has shared his views on cricket, captaincy and much more across a string of fascinating and erudite books, most recently in On Form, which won The Times Book of the Year in 2017.

Come and join us in London on March 7th and listen to Mike’s recollections and reflections, in conversation with one of his former Middlesex charges, editor of The Cricketer Simon Hughes, and get the chance to pose your own questions:

  • How did he recognise the different methods needed to manage different players? What was the secret to coaxing out match winning performances from the likes of Ian Botham and Bob Willis?

  • Were there any players he found it difficult to lead? Who were his toughest opposite numbers?

  • How does he think the role of England captain has changed since he was playing? Has the lack of experience at county level been a problem for Joe Root and Alastair Cook?

  • If he could pick one lesson from his seminal cricket book the Art of Captaincy to pass on to youngsters, what would it be? And if he were writing the book today how different would it be?

Please do join us for what should be a wonderful evening - but please note tickets are strictly limited - so book now to avoid disappointment.
