Description

About the course

This session will explore the counter-intuitive thesis that the school curriculum is enhanced (not weakened) and that pupil attainment is, in fact, raised through developing the rigorous study of religion and philosophy.

This course will explore the extrinsic value of religious education and how a knowledge-rich approach to the study of religion and philosophy can improve outcomes for pupils, especially disadvantaged pupils, in GCSE English literature, for example.

The course will doubly unpack the intrinsic importance of the discipline and explore the components of a coherent, knowledge-rich curriculum that is based on thoughtful and intelligent sequencing.

Who should attend?

Heads of department with responsibility for religious education and philosophy; curriculum leaders in humanities; teachers of religious education, religious studies, and philosophy; SLT with responsibility for curriculum.

The tutor

Dr Richard Kueh is subject specialist leader for Religion and Philosophy at the Inspiration Trust. A qualified RE teacher and former head of department, Richard has shaped his practice in both the state and independent sectors. Most recently, he formed part of the curriculum and pastoral leadership team who launched a new free school in Cambridgeshire.

Richard wrote his doctoral thesis on the philosophy of Hans-Georg Gadamer. He has written on the rationale for Religious Education and RE's curriculum knowledge problem. A leading researcher-practitioner, Richard has been Fellow and Scholar of the Farmington Institute at Harris Manchester College, Oxford.
