Event description
Join us for a special guided tour about the fire that burnt the Crystal Palace, followed by complimentary mince pies and hot drinks!

About this event

On the night of the 30 November 1936, an epic blaze burnt down the Crystal Palace! The fire could be seen from Hampstead Heath to the north and the South Downs to the south, 6 million gallons of water were exhausted to try to stem the flames, and it was remembered vividly by thousands of Londoners for years after. And in fact the 1936 fire was just one of nine which broke out on the site over the years! The exhibition site had attracted nearly 100 million visitors during the 82 years it stood there and was one of the original and most famous exhibition sites in the world – all gone over one awful night.

Just a few days after the 85th anniversary of the 1936 fire, the Crystal Palace Museum is holding a special tour of the park to tell the story of that epic night and a few of the lesser-known fires.

The tour will be followed by mince pies, biscuits, hot drinks and mulled wine during a special opening of the museum.

This will be a very hot ticket! So come and take the Great Crystal Palace Fire Walk with us!

The tour starts from the Museum at 12:00 midday (doors opening at 11:30), lasting 1 ¼ hours, followed by hot drinks and mince pies and a glass of mulled wine included in the ticket and a special opening of the Museum.

Tickets can be purchased in advance, from the Museum during opening times on Sunday, through Eventbrite or on the day subject to availability. Advance booking is recommended as will need to limit the event to 40 in the current COVID-19 circumstances.
