Join us on February 15th for gin & tonics, canapes and literary merrimentas our compere, Gower Street’s Elizabeth Morris, introduces four exciting new novelists making their debuts this Spring: Jessie Greengrass, Kerry Andrew, Emma Glass and Abi Andrews.
About the Books
Jessie Greengrass is the author of prize-winning short story collection An Account of the Decline of the Great Auk, According to One Who Saw It . Her first novel, Sight (John Murray) is a brilliantly told, profoundly moving novel in which a woman recounts her progress to motherhood, while remembering the death of her own mother.
Swansong (Vintage)by is a hallucinatory and haunting adaptation of the ballad ‘Molly Bawn’, written by celebrated composer and alternative- folk musician Kerry Andrew. In this modern retelling a young woman tries to escape her guilt over a disturbing incident in the volatile wilderness of the Scottish Highlands. Alone in this myth-drenched landscape, she is increasingly prone to visions– floating white shapes in the waters of the loch or in the woods – and becomes terrified and fascinated by a strange man she comes across in the forest.
Described as I Love Dick meets Into the Wild, Abi Andrews’ The Word for Woman is Wilderness (Serpent’s Tail) is about 19 year old Erin, who embarks on a voyage into the Alaskan wilderness on her own, a one-woman challenge to the archetype of the rugged male explorer. As she documents her journey, her musings range from the moon-landing, to nuclear war and the pill.
Lauded by George Saunders as ‘an immensely talented young writer’, Emma Glass is the author of Peach (Bloomsbury), a weird and darkly arresting debut about the internal life of a young woman. Referenced as the ‘new Jane Eyre’ and likened to A Girl is A Half-Formed Thing, this is a fascinating exploration of trauma.
