Event description

Description

Environmental and land defenders are at the frontline of a global battleground, standing up to the governments and companies that steal their land and harm the environment, calling out the corrupt and unjust practices that enable it.

From indigenous leaders standing up to the ruthless scramble for natural wealth in the Amazon, to park rangers protecting the nature reserves of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the faces of environmental defenders span continents, countries and regions. Yet too often they are threatened, attacked and killed.

In partnership with The Guardian over the last year, Global Witness has been tracking every defender’s tragic death, to raise awareness of the deadly struggle to defend their land and protect our planet.

This event will mark a year of our partnership as well as launching Global Witness's new Annual Global Report on Defenders which reveals a deeper exposé of the businesses and governments allowing – and sometimes perpetrating – attacks and murders of defenders.

The event will include:

  • Private view of a stunning new photo exhibition, with portraits of land and environmental defenders from around the world, photographed by the award winning photo activist Thom Pierce.
  • Policy panel discussion including a member of the Defenders team at Global Witness and Jon Watts, South America Editor at The Guardian.
