About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

Join me for an almost circular route around Crouch End's main junction. Hear how leafy lanes and rolling countryside evolved to become an upmarket Victorian village that today still retains a sense of exclusivity and charm.

Starting a stone's throw from Hornsey Town Hall, you'll hear the story behind this marvellous Art Deco era municipal facility and its adjacent buildings. Learn about the artists and architects involved.

We'll then visit other interesting constructions in the vicinity, taking in many of the details shown in the montage of my photos above.

You'll see a variety of architectural styles and design details throughout the ages – Victorian shop fronts, small cottages, educational facilities, post-war rebuildings and, of course, the clocktower. We'll admire curved windows and coloured glass, fabulously-tiled doorways, elegant carved reliefs and hand-painted signs.

The tour ends at a fabulous example of Art Nouveau extravagance at a Grade II* listed pub – even if you don't fancy a post-walk drink, you really should venture inside for a peek at the preserved interior.

Along the route, keep your eyes peeled because the area is popular with TV celebrities and actors and it's highly likely that you will spot a well-known face, walking their dog or doing their shopping in Waitrose.

Ally Pally, Muswell Hill, The Old Dairy, Hornsey School of Art, The New River and Parkland Walk are all mentioned on the tour and are within easy access.

Customer feedback: "I was so engrossed that it came as a surprise as we came to the end that two whole hours had passed" / "Your knowledge is amazing and I love your jolly style" / "As someone who thought he knew the area well, I am embarrassed to admit I had never before noticed half the things you showed us!"/ "I love how you point out all the little quirks and make it so much more interesting than other academic-style guides. And you make it fun too. Thanks" / "...so engaging, thanks to your delivery style and obvious thirst for knowledge" / More feedback here

My guiding style is inclusive, open and friendly. I design and research every tour myself – in fact, the research never ends. The walks and talks I offer are all on subjects that intrigue me and each one highlights a different facet of my personality. I am particularly interested in the architecture of our ever-changing streets and the little details on and above them. For more information, please visit www.janeslondonwalks.com

Organised by

I have lived in Islington, North London simce 1988 and have been facscinated by the area's history. The unusual details on, above and along London's streets impelled me to start a blog www.janeslondon.com and this, in turn, evolved into the touring arm of www.janeslondonwalks.com

There is, as they say, so much out there hiding in plain sight.
