Event description

Description

A 5 mile circular walk along Offas Dyke path and return along the river Wye. Tintern is renowned for its majestic and impressive Abbey and the Wye Valley is designated as an area of outstanding beauty. However, in legend and in truth, this valley had its own devils to fight.

Terrain: Woodland, fields and lanes with some steep paths up to cliffs.

WALK:

  • The easier route up to the devils pulpit view point! Stroll along Offas dyke path from pretty Brockweir up to the devils pulpit for a picturesque view of the Abbey, back along the river Wye and Tintern Old Station.

SEE:

  • The devils pulpit rock with its famous view down to Tintern Abbey and feel the power of the incredible yew tree in the rocks......or is it the sword in the stone?
  • Tinterns water mill and hear of the devil of industrialisation in the valley.

VISIT:

  • Brockweir, a medieval village, once the centre of such degrading and immoral behaviour in the 1800s that the devil had to live there. See the Moravian church built on the site of the old cock fighting pit.
  • Tintern Old Railway Station, with its willow time tunnel and its circle of legends. Who, of the carved statues, is friend and who is foe?

HEAR:

  • From the devil himself as to how the devils pulpit got its name.
  • Why was there so much mayhem at Brockweir? Hear from the doctor who could stand it no longer and tried to bring about change there.
  • Listen to Tewdrigs story from the circle of legends and learn how a celtic warrior can never really retire.

Lunch: There are facilities to buy lunch and snacks at the cafe in Abbey Mill and Tintern old Station.

Meeting point: Brockweir Inn, Brockweir. NP16 7NG

Directions: sat nav NP16 6NG. Turn off the A466 between Monmouth and Chepstow to Brockweir. Brockweir turn off is signposted. Turn right if coming from Chepstow or Tintern Abbey and if coming from Monmouth turn left.
