About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

Brighton has a history of bucking the trend, of being different. Who remembers the campaign for the People’s Republic of Brighton & Hove, set up in the wake of 2015 elections?

Fast forward to 2025, and devolution is the new buzz word of the moment. Sussex and Brighton have been identified as an area for priority devolution, the transfer of powers and funding from national to local government, with a strategic authority and elected mayor.

Devolution has been shown to boost local economic growth and local jobs - and with over 60% of England already under devolved powers, it seems inevitable. But what actually is devolution, and what does it mean in practice for businesses and economic growth in our city?

Could devolution unlock new funding streams and opportunities for businesses? What could it do to support skills development? What does it mean for the city’s green credentials and Net Zero? Are we sleepwalking into something that will have unintended, and undesirable consequences?

At this Big Debate, we’re bringing together the business community in Brighton and beyond to look at what devolution could mean for the city’s economic outlook, it’s identity and the region’s prospects.

Join us and hear from a panel of experts addressing this key issue facing businesses in the city – and get involved in the conversation where we ask your thoughts too.

Chaired by Natalie Orringe, Founder of Strategy + Impact, we'll be joined by our panel:
