Event description

Description

The Diary of a Nobody is a much-loved amusing work of fiction by the artistic brothers George and Weedon Grossmith. Originally a column in Punch magazine in 1888, the diary was later published in book form in 1892 and is still in print today. It has often been adapted as plays and TV productions.

Bringing fiction to life, this walk takes you around the late Victorian lower-to-middle-class Upper Holloway that Mr Pooter would have known. Hear about his silly arguments with the ironmonger, the butter man and the stationer. See hints of where businesses of this kind were located in Pooter's era. You'll also laugh at his clunky puns and roll your eyes at some of his misguided or deluded observations. We all know a Mr Pooter!

Along the way we' ll look at sites that could have inspired some of the things in the book, such as manufactories, shops and places of entertainment.

You don't need to have already read the book to enjoy this tour, but once you hear some of the excerpts you'll definitely be tempted to buy it afterwards.

Many remnants of 1880s re still visible today in the form of old shops, signage, street furniture and metalwork. DIscover where the Grossmiths' amusing characters might have lived, where they would have purchased some of the items mentioned in the book, how they travelled, what they ate and drank (and they seemed to drink quitell a lot!).

Please note, this is not the same content as my Holloway Heyday walk which is set in a similar era.

Jane ParkerMy guiding style is inclusive, open and friendly. I design and research every tour myself – in fact, the research never ends.
The walking tours I offer are all on subjects I am genuinely interested in – each highlights a different facet of my personality. I am specifically interested in the changing face of our streets over time and how those changes have affected local communities and the social history of an area.
