Event description
The conference will showcase Dorset Mammal Group's pioneering co-ordinated approach to hedgehog conservation.

About this Event

The Dorset Mammal Group’s (DMG) successful approach to hedgehog conservation in Dorset co-ordinates community action, skilled hedgehog rescuers and veterinary practices. This conference will share this strategy and place it in the national scientific context of steep hedgehog decline.

Speakers include:

Dr Nigel Reeve, a leading ecologist who has studied hedgehogs for over 40 years, will talk about the Regents Park study and hedgehog research projects across Europe.

Hugh Warwick, a well-known hedgehog champion, will talk about his work with the species in Oxfordshire.

Colin Varndell, a professional wildlife photographer, will show extracts from his thought-provoking visual presentation The Hedgehog Predicament.

Susy Varndell, DMG’s hedgehog lead, will give an overview of the six point hedgehog conservation strategy: hedgehog friendly towns and villages, public education, a network of hedgehog rescues and vets, training events, keeping up with research and establishment of a hedgehog hospital in Dorset.

There will also be speakers from local communities, the rescue network and Dorset Council’s Natural Environment Team.

The conference fee includes tea/coffee on arrival and at refreshment breaks throughout the day.
