Description

The do's and don’ts of working with Students’ Unions

What do you think of when you hear the term “students’ union”? Societies and sports clubs? Volunteering and course representative schemes? Places that sell cheap beer?

Whilst all these things are true, students’ unions are also immensely complicated, multi-faceted charities, often with millions of pounds worth of turnover per year, that are run entirely by and for their student members. Adding to this complexity, every students’ union is unique and all possess an ever-changing leadership team.

As competition increases to secure the best graduate talent and compete for students’ attention, working with students’ unions can help you build a brand name on campus, attract the best candidates for your business and tap into a pipeline of potential collaborators and future employees.

By the end of the workshop you will:

  • Understand how students’ unions work and the key role they play in students’ lives
  • Know how working with students’ unions can benefit your business, from building your brand on campus to recruiting talented students
  • Be confident knowing what you can gain from students’ unions and how to engage with them
  • For university careers staff: explore effective ways of working in partnership with your students’ union to support your employer-facing work and increase student engagement

Who should attend?

  • Graduate and student employers
  • Businesses seeking to increase engagement with students
  • University staff looking to develop projects and partnerships with their Students’ Unions around business engagement and employability

The session will be delivered by Gabi Binnie, Gradconsult:

Gabi’s professional career began when she was elected into the role of Welfare Officer for Sheffield Students’ Union. As a Project Consultant with Gradconsult, she recently finished a seven-month secondment with the Careers and Employability team at Kingston University, London, and now manages all employer engagement in RISE SCR, a Sheffield region-wide programme offering funded recruitment services to SMEs. She is keen to help employers, universities and students’ unions find ways to work together to develop the employability of students and graduates.

Group discounts and in-house courses are available. For details of these, or to enquire about alternative dates / locations, please contact kerry@gradconsult.co.uk
