About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

The Empire Windrush is one of the most famous ships in history yet so little of truth is known about it. This session explodes the myths surrounding the Windrush. Built in Germany, it made only one voyage to and from the West Indies. The return journey to Tilbury carried over 1,000 passengers, around half of them Black. It was not a case of “you called and we came” as there was widespread opposition to the arrival of so many West Indian people even though many had recently fought for the 'Mother Country' in World War Two. Hear the true story of the Empire Windrush.
