Description

MANCHESTER COLLECTIVE BEGIN THEIR TENURE AS ENSEMBLE IN RESIDENCE AT THE STOLLER HALL WITH MESSIAEN'S HARROWING MASTERPIECE: "QUARTET FOR THE END OF TIME".

The work was written in 1941, while the French composer was a prisoner of war at Stalag VIII-A, a Nazi POW camp in Germany. It was premiered by fellow inmates to an audience of about 400 prisoners and guards, outside, in the rain. Messiaen later said of the premiere: "Never was I listened to with such rapt attention and comprehension".

As is the case with many great works of art, Messiaen's Quartet can be elusive, veiled, and intricate. It is a work full of secrets, and one hearing alone can only scratch the surface of the depths within. At the heart of our project is a musical journey of discovery - lead by Artistic Director Adam Szabo, Manchester Collective will dismantle and reassemble the Quartet, leading the listeners through this awesome work with the help of live excerpts, and a unique "behind the scenes" insight into the process of preparing such monumental piece.

Following this, four of the most outstanding musical talents in the UK will bring this explosive work to life in performance - violinist and MC Music Director Rakhi Singh, pianist Simon Parkin, cellist Adam Szabo, and clarinettist Fraser Langton.
