Description

London Book & Screen Week is going Wilde for St Patrick’s Day! Join Dr Michèle Mendelssohn, who will discuss her acclaimed new biography Making Oscar Wilde with journalist and author Paul Burston, founder of the UK’s leading LGBT literary salon, Polari. Offering an insightful new examination of Wilde’s early career, Making Oscar Wilde tells the story of a local Irish eccentric called Oscar who became a global cultural icon. Set on two continents, the book is a cultural history of sensation-hungry Victorian journalism and popular entertainment alongside racial controversies, sex scandals, and the rising power of Irish nationalism in the United States.

This conversation will be followed by a screening of the critically-acclaimed biopic The Happy Prince, starring Rupert Everett.
