“The Enigma of Igbo Ukwu: exploring the origins of West African Civilization”
Professor Susan Keech McIntosh, Herbert S. Autrey Professor of Anthropology, Rice University, USA, guest of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, will offer this public Memorial Keynote Lecture in honour of the great Africanist, the late Professor Thurstan Shaw,
Professor McIntosh will explain the richness of West Africa’s early civilizations. Her presentation will draw on the work of Thurstan Shaw and his famous excavations at Igbo-Ukwu in Southern Nigeria as well as Susan's own ground-breaking work on early urbanism in the Inland Niger Delta in Mali. In an engaging manner the keynote will situate West Africa’s archaeology and heritage in a broader context.
