In recent years there has been something of a blackout in media coverage of environmental issues. From issues like fracking to climate change, we have seen the progressive deprioritising of the environment on the media agenda. As well as this, there has been a marked unwillingness to connect unusual weather, such as the 2016 Boxing Day floods across Yorkshire with the risk of climate change. They are presented as one offs, examples of freak weather, rather than symptoms of a rapidly advancing climate crisis. The media's refusal to engage with these issues has had a direct correlation with the decline of climate change as a political priority. From the absence of climate change in the Prime Ministerial debates in 2015, to the ending of subsidies for renewable energy and the abolition of the Department for Climate Change by Theresa May, it is obvious that this media blackout is having tangible affects.
The question is then - what can the environmental movement, with the opportunities presented to us by new technology and the rise of alternative media platforms, do about it? How can we work to bring climate change back to number one political priority in the UK?
