As a species, humans need sleep in as much as they need food, water and oxygen, without doing so would be fatal. Certainly, with poor sleep a person’s daily quality of life is affected in terms of their ability to function, both physically and mentally, and this is an issue women may experience on a regular basis throughout their life.

From hormone transitions, to work and family responibilities to living with pain, a women's sleep can be compromised across her lifespan. Join author of The Essential Guide to Women's Sleep: healthy practices for wellbeing and performance, Dr Sarah Gilchrist as she is quizzed about women's sleep by renowned explorer and podcaster Sue Stockdale.


Dr Sarah Gilchrist

Dr Sarah Gilchrist spent over 20 years working in the high performance sport industry, latterly as a Technical Lead for the UK Sports Institute and Senior Physiologist with British Rowing. Her doctorate specialised in sleep and athletic performance and she now provides consultancy on a range of performance areas, particularly relating to sleep. She regularly works with corporate audiences helping them create a better understanding of sleep and performance and the interaction between the two. She is an advisory member of The Sleep Charity, a previous Chair of the Chartered Association of Sport Sciences Accreditation committee and is a High Performance Sport Accredited practitioner. Her new book was published in 2025 entitled: 'The Essential Guide to Women's Sleep. Supporting Healthy Sleep Practices for Wellbeing and Performance'.

Sue Stockdale

Sue Stockdale is a pioneering adventurer, executive coach, and author, best known as the first UK woman to ski to the Magnetic North Pole. She has travelled to over 75 countries, represented Scotland in athletics, and was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the Royal Scottish Geographical Society in 2024 for her exploration achievements and contribution to inspiring others. As a global speaker and host of the award-winning Access to Inspiration podcast, she has interviewed diverse voices from artists to astronauts across more than 25 countries.
