About this Event

The Essex Green

2018 was a big year for The Essex Green, with the vinyl reissues of two Merge classics The Long Goodbye and Cannibal Sea and the release of Hardly Electronic, the long-awaited new album from the band.

Inspired by the psychedelic sounds of the '60s while adding some lilting folk-rock and the occasional bit of classic country to the mix, the Essex Green were part of the Elephant 6- affiliated scene of the late '90s. The band shared members with the Ladybug Transistor for a few years, and like that group, their take on chamber pop was gentle and richly arranged. After recording an album for Kindercore, they released two albums for Merge in the early to mid-2000s, then, after long break from working together, reunited without a hitch and released Hardly Electronic in 2018.

Fergus

Fergus writes songs according to his mood, often choosing to embrace the melancholy, and through it finding a place of healing, beauty, and serenity. His formative years were spent singing and touring professionally with choirs, and playing ‘cello with orchestras. When this period of his life - a half, up to that point - came to an end he found himself burnt out, without a sense of identity. Seeking self-discovery, he rebelled. After a time adrift, his love of making music returned for good. Fergus turned his ability to blend into a strength, achieving harmony with his guitar and himself.

Lowell Thompson

"Lowell's songs are pure pop, charging along with crashing choruses, guitar countermelody, and surprise changes (spoiler alert: the solo acoustic opener doesn’t stay solo or acoustic). They zig-zag away from pigeonhole – the plaintive singer-songwriter tune becomes a caveman-rhythm dirge before taking a honky-tonk turn.

Lowell’s easy voice moves seamlessly between spitty indictment (Rose Petals), moody defenselessness (Sunday Morning), and breathless rave-up (Honey It’s True). He merges styles without drawing attention to his clever arrangements. It sounds like good music."
