Event description

Description

UCL European Horizons is honoured to be welcoming Dr. Rebecca Johnson, member of the International Steering Group and former Co-Chair of ICAN (the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize laureate) and Founder and Director of Acronym Institute for Disarmament Diplomacy, and Elizabeth Minor, an Advisor for Article 36.

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) is a global civil society coalition working to promote the full realisation of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

The campaign received the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize "for its work to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons”.

Acronym Institute for Disarmament Diplomacy is a non-profit organisation and their work focuses primarily on Security, Disarmament, Women and Peace-building issues. Their purpose is to draw attention to the interconnected human and environmental challenges that have become most urgent for humanity's survival.

Acronym was founded in 1996, and one of their current priorities, as a founding member of the Steering Group of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), is bringing renewed awareness about the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons. Connecting with states and civil society who want to reduce these nuclear threats, their are prioritising getting a legally binding, international treaty to prohibit the use, deployment, proliferation and stockpiling of nuclear weapons and require their total elimination.

Article 36 is a UK-based not-for-profit organisation working to prevent the unintended, unnecessary or unacceptable harm caused by certain weapons. Article 36 undertakes research, policy and advocacy and promotes civil society partnerships to respond to harm caused by existing weapons and to build a stronger framework to prevent harm as weapons are used or developed in the future.

The speakers will address current concerns regarding the role of the EU in nuclear disarmament, while explaining ICAN and Article 36’s role in promoting a full implementation of the treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons within the European Union!

This talk is especially relevant at this time of history: with a soaring crisis between Trump and Kim Jong Un, come along to know more about current issues.
