Description

The Ever Expanding Boundaries of Knowledge: Defining the Research Business for the 21st-Century.

Inaugural Lecture by Maria Burke, Professor of Management.

In this inaugural speech Professor Burke invites us to consider the creation of new knowledge:

As humans we are curious about our world – we strive to know more, to understand more, to be enlightened. Within the higher education context we will consider current and future directions of research. This will be achieved by a discussion of the aims of higher education; the aims of research communities; the impact of technological developments and the ensuing data issues. These data issues have arisen from our thirst for knowledge and it is this new knowledge that allows us to contribute to the enhancement of social, cultural and economic prosperity - to meet the challenges of our technologically driven, interconnected 21st-century life.

Professor Burke is Professor of Management and Head of Research and Knowledge Exchange for the Faculty of Business, Law and Sport. She holds a PhD in Information Systems, a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and a postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies (DMS).

Professor Burke’s area of research expertise concerns the application of new digital technology to economic, environmental and social systems. Research publications include several books, book chapters, many journal papers and international conference papers. She has an excellent record of attracting external income from UK Research Councils and European Union Funds, winning prizes for the research such as the B2B Best Internet Award and the EPSRC National Impact Prize. In 2014 she was elected as Fellow to the Royal Society of Arts and Commerce.

Given by newly appointed professors, inaugural lectures provide a platform for them to inform academic colleagues, University staff, students and the wider community of their current and future research.

Light refreshments served from 6pm for 6:30pm start.
