Event Details

Would you like to join other fashion enthusiasts and learn about Georgian and Regency fashion history? Would you like to hear about an art project which recreates historic fashion in paper?

Join us on Saturday 19th October for an afternoon all about Georgian and Regency Fashion.

To be held in the drawing room of The Regency Town House in Brunswick Square, there will be two talks each of 45 minutes duration, one exploring fans and fashion, the other presenting an art costume project 'The Regency Wardrobe Collection'.

In the interval enjoy tea and cakes made by our kitchen team in the Town House basement kitchen.

The Fan Talks

Fans were an essential fashion accessory and where fashion led, so fans would follow.

This talk describes the various types of English paper fans and how they were crafted and used, closely following the great change in styles of dress as the 18th century led into the Regency period.

The speaker, Mary Kitson, is a freelance art history lecturer specialising in fans, a consultant to The Fan Museum in Greenwich and Membership Secretary of the Fan Circle International.

The Regency Wardrobe Collection

Stephanie Smart established The House of Embroidered Paper as a unique fashion house and fine art studio. She is currently Artist-in-Residence at The Regency Town House, where she is developing The Regency Wardrobe Collection, to be exhibited during Brighton Festival in May 2020.

Each garment she makes is inspired by period and place, history and story, and each is created using only paper and thread.

By constructing the garments entirely out of paper, with embroidered and applied decoration, Stephanie is creating a collection that re-interprets the popular Regency art form of the paper-cut silhouette and responds to the history of the house.

When completed, The Regency Wardrobe Collection will be centred around 8 or 9 life-sized outfits, complemented with individual items of clothing and accessories. While each piece will be accompanied by related research text and imagery, in accordance with her practice it will also stand alone as a piece of intricate and intriguing decorative fine art.

Stephanie will talk about the background to her work using paper textiles and her current work at The Regency Town House.

The Regency Town House

The Regency Town House is raising the profile of Brighton & Hove as a historic location.  We encourage a better preservation of the city's built heritage.  We are developing an appreciation of Regency architecture and social history.

We are in the process of recreating a traditionally refurbished historic home. We offer a programme of events about the history/architectural heritage of Brighton & Hove. We are also developing digital resources relating to life in the Regency period.
