About this Event

The Fascination of layering - Oliver Brix 2 day course

Oliver Brix presents: All-ceramic restorations that can no longer be distinguished from the natural tooth structure areincreasingly being demanded by patients as well as dentists. The dental technicians objective should not be to create artificially white orunnaturally regular rows of teeth, but a natural and harmonious overall impression. In brief, to recreate the kind of teeth that areindistinguishable from genuine ones and that are perfectly integrated into the patient's mouth.

In order to achieve this aim Oliver Brix exclusively uses all-ceramic solutions for all of his restorative work. The high-strengthall ceramic materials, are similar to natural teeth in terms of translucency, this allows us to perform reconstructions that are close tonature. Such technical procedures also require the greatest care and skill, as well as the use of state-of-the-art dental technology. Onlythe utmost attention to detail and the highest aesthetic standards allow for harmonious results. The challenge to the dental technician isof copying nature, achieving shade harmony and creating dental restorations of the highest aesthetic level. Even in the era ofdigitalisation, the individual layering technique of dental ceramics remains the method of choice for copying nature. The opportunity fordental technicians to attend this ceramic workshop offers the possibility to gain invaluable information, tips and tricks for thesuccessful manufacture of high aesthetic restorations made from all ceramics.

Learning components for the ceramic workshop comprise of the following:

Presentation:

The two days begin with an introductory presentation from Oliver on the subject of "The Art Of Layering" dental ceramics. During thispresentation, observation of the natural tooth, dental morphology and different tooth structures will be analysed and related to Oliver'sexperience and understanding of the layering of ceramics from the IPS e.max ceram system.

Practical:

Participants of the ceramic workshop will spend the majority of their time within the training laboratory of the ICDE. ObservingOliver as he demonstrates the methods and protocols used routinely for the fabrication of all ceramic restorations. Under the tutor'sguidance participants will fabricate their own restorations on the maxillary model and copings they prepared prior to thecourse.

Aim:

The aim of this master course is to use dental ceramics to rebuild several upper anterior teeth using different layering techniquesand methods. Detailed explanation of the special shade compositions of dental ceramics and demonstration of their specialised applicationis shown so that participants gain a greater understanding of how to reduce the risk of shade error and improve the aesthetic outcome fortheir patients.

Participants will be shown the individual layering techniques including Oliver's own laboratory production method the 'one-baketechnique' and different ways to improve the foundation firing method with additional internal colouration andcharacterisation.

Prior to the start of the course, each participant will receive a maxillary model with preparations of the selected anteriorteeth. Accompanying the maxillary model are detailed instruction on how the participants will need to manufacture 3 copings from aselection of IPS e.max ZirCAD or PRESS methods. Advisory to use the following shade and translucency:

N.B. Participants are to bring the pre-course work with them to the workshop, please don’t leave the model and copings at their laboratory!

Objectives:

• Gain an understanding of the possibilities of dental all-ceramics

• Improve participants use of dental ceramics with the sole aim to mimic 'True-to-nature shade design'

• Gain an understanding of the control of light absorption and light reflection within different translucencies of dentalceramics

• How to make shade adjustments of the various translucencies available within the ceramic layering concept of the IPS e.maxSystem

• Learn how firing procedures can positively and negatively affect the dental ceramic

• Increased understanding of how to make adjustments to the firing protocols to eliminate errors in dental ceramic

• Improve the production of tooth shape and tooth shade using an additive layering technique of dental ceramics

• Gain a greater knowledge of the importance of replication and design of the physiological interdental spaces within dentalmorphology

• Introduced to Oliver's protocol of using rotary burs to imitate the natural tooth surface texture with a view to replicatingnature

• How to apply glaze materials to the restoration, identify glazing issues and impart information on how to correct the issue with increased understanding of corrective glaze firing processes

• Gain knowledge of mechanical polishing with rotary burs and polishers to optimize the degree of lustre to mimic the natural tooth

Learning Outcomes:

This master ceramic course looks to provide the participants with an in-depth understanding of case planning for all ceramic restorations. The tutor will impart information to participants to improve their knowledge of the correct production protocols of dental restorations fabricated with all ceramic dental materials. Furthermore, increase participants understanding of layering dental ceramic to improve the aesthetic outcome. All method and techniques work to the tutors experience and consider the manufacturers guidelines.
