Event description

Description

The Festival of Empire was the single most ambitious event since the Crystal Palace had opened. It was King George V's first public engagement as king and was an extravagant and expensive celebration of empire. And yet, the Palace's popularity was waning badly, and, mired in debts, the company had been wound up and the reciever had just put the site up for sale!

But what a show it was!

Richard's illustrated talk tells the story of the Festival of 1911, with its epic parades and spectacularly recreated foreign landscapes, using programme extracts, prints and mementoes.

The Festival might just have been the last big party before the great ship Crystal Palace sunk beneath the waves!

This event is part of the Crystal Palace Festival 2019. The event, on Thursday 20th June, starts at 19:30 with doors open at 19:15 via the Anerley Hill side of the building. No admittance after 19:40. Talk lasts 45 minutes, followed by questions. Time to browse the Museum and chat with staff over complimentary refreshments after.
