Description

The Colour of Chemistry

Lancashire has been at the focal point of Chemistry and Physics since Ernest Rutherford was award the Nobel Prize in 1908 for Chemistry and J. J. Thompson was award the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1906.

These early pioneers in sciences have led a trail that now stands Lancashire as holding 25 Nobel prizes

At the forefront of science has been the Royal Institution of London, both in public engagement but also as a laboratory for many scientists of note such as Sir Humphry Davy and Michael Faraday. There continual present in science with their many public debates and events such as their annual Christmas lecture series has been an inspiration to generations of scientists worldwide.

Towards these ends a Chemist, Frederick Crace Calvert was awarded custodianship of the Lancashire equivalent; The Royal Manchester Institution.

His focus on precursors in organic chemistry such as phenol, helped drive Sir Joseph Listers work with antiseptics which ultimately saved many lives. This dedication to Science is recognised by the Royal Society of Chemistry blue plaque erected in his Memory on Princess Street, Manchester.

In recognition of the history of science in our region and of Frederick Crace Calvert heading The Royal Institution of Manchester, we are proud to announce the inaugural Christmas lecture series by the University technical college in collaboration with the University of Bolton.

The evening will be both informative and enjoyable and we hope to see your there.

Due to Safety concerns we have been advised that this lecture is only suitable for those above 14 years, people under that age will not be admitted.
