Event Details

This learning event will be concentrating on the challenges and opportunities for building based arts and cultural organisations at this time.

Our title is inspired by Clara Miller's seminal essay "The Four Horsemen of the Nonprofit Financial Apocalyspe" where she describes Horseman One as follows:

"Horseman One: Too Much Real Estate

Non Proft Finance Fund (NFF)  research indicates that about one third of organisations that acquire facilitites can manage these shoals well. This third ends up with a building that cradles the programe and works financially: a true triumph. Another third manages to complete the building but arrives gasping at the beach; as a result, this group becomes the walking wounded. Among this group, programme quality and financial health are typically impaired for years. For a final third, financial imbalance pervade operations to the point of requiring reorganisation or even extinction."

As 'Austerity Britain' becomes the norm how can we? (can we?) find new ways of coping and/or changing the way we approach and/or manage our arts and cultural buildings as Clara suggests at the end of her essay, and what might happen to our arts and cultural ecology if we do/don't?

Come along, listen to fellow peers Liam Sinclair and Gwilym Gibbons and the ever inciteful chief 'awkward questioner' of our arts and cultural 'sphere, Diane Ragsdale and roll your sleeves up with your fellow peers to wrestle out some new ways of coping/changing in relation to this hugely important issue.
