Event description

Description

Just a 20 minute drive from the harbour town of Porthmadog, you will find Croesor, a small isolated village, set in a magnificent glaciated valley within the mountain range known as the Moelwynion.

Meeting at Oriel Caffi Croesor, we will first ascend Cnicht, or the Welsh Matterhorn as it is also known. At just 647m high, it's not the highest mountain you will ever climb, but I'm sure once you have completed it, you will put it down on your list of all time favourites.

We then continue over the back of Cnicht onto The North Top (another Nutall if you are counting, but not a mountain in the true sense.) The next stop will be the forgotten and long abandoned mining village of Rhosydd. Here you will see insights into how hard life would have been for the slate miners all those years ago. Working long hours, in the harshest of conditions. If they lived till they were 40 they were very lucky.

After a spot of lunch we head off to ascend Moelwyn Mawr (The Great White Hill) where you will see, in my opinion, the best view Snowdonia has to offer. Then off over the rugged lines of Graigysgafn, where you will have good views of Llyn Stiwlan and over towards Trawsfynydd. If we still have time, we can then ascend Moelwyn Bach (The Little White Hill) before heading back down into Croesor.

This is a great day out in one of the quieter areas of Snowdonia, and one of the few places left, that you can still get that feeling of wilderness.

If we have enough time to complete the 3 summits it will be a walk of around 10 miles. The ascent up Moelwyn Mawr is quite steep but not too long.
