Event description

Description

Many ancient civilisations believed that humans were made of the four elements - earth, wind, fire and water. Maintaining a balance between them all was to ensure the harmony of our physical and emotional wellbeing. In Ancient Greece, Plato is believed to have been the first to use the term "element' in reference to air, fire, earth, and water. Aristotle, in his 'On Generation and Corruption', related each of the four elements to two of the four sensible qualities – hot, cold, dry and wet.

With fire being both hot and dry. Air is both hot and wet; water is cold and wet; and earth is cold and dry. The elements were of such importance that they garnered significant symbolism that was depicted in art through the ages. This day tour of the National Gallery explores paintings which reflect each of these natural elements.

The price includes the services of your lecturer, entry tickets and a morning and afternoon tea/coffee break.
