Event description

Description

Writer David Gange and illustrator Christina Riley come to Lighthouse to launch this extraordinary book which reclaims the histories of Britain and Ireland's coasts.

Over the course of a year, leading historian and nature writerm David Gange travelled the entirety of the weather-ravaged coasts of Atlantic Britain and Ireland.

Travelling low in the water in a kayak, Gange explores every coast, cove, and inlet of these islands from north to south, weaving together archival histories and poetic literatures and languages to once again breathe life into the way we think of our coastal towns.

David will be joined by the incredible illustrator The Frayed Atlantic Edge, Christina Riley, who will be discussing the beauty and art of the coasts, and her illustrative contributions to the book.

David Gange is a Senior Lecturer in modern history, and part of the Centre for Modern British Studies, at the University of Birmingham. His first books were cultural histories of the nineteenth century.

Bringing together traditional, alternative and cameraless photography with botanical pressings, Christina Riley explore the landscape around us and how we relate to the environment that we inhabit and impact so significantly.

Her photography has a focus on dance, food and lifestyle, working regularly with Scotland’s national performing arts companies (Scottish Ballet, Scottish Opera) and individual dance artists. She recently completed photographing the latest cookbook from chef Ghillie Basan, published by Kitchen Press.
