Who should attend?

This course will benefit participants seeking a practical course to help understand their responsibilities when individuals exercise their rights under Freedom of Information and also includes Environmental Information Regulations. This course explores the management of Freedom of Information Requests (FOIs) with scenarios that guide participants through the essential steps involved in handling requests compliantly. 

NB: This course covers the Freedom of Information Act in detail (not the Freedom of Information Scotland Act 2002). The course main focus is the Freedom of Information Act in the most depth, with a lighter touch examinations of the Environmental Information Regulations.

Learning Objectives:


  • Describe the history of access to information legislation.
  • Recognise the difference between Freedom of Information requests (EIR), Environmental information requests (EIR)and data rights requests.
  • To understand the scope of the legislation and which organisations it applies to.
  • Recognise the requirements of a valid request under FOI and EIR.
  • Describe the process for handling requests including time scales and internal reviews.
  • Recognise the situations in which a request can be refused.
  • Identify the exemptions (FOI) and exceptions (EIR) and when these can be applied
  • Describe the meaning of vexatious requests and when requests can be refused.
  • Describe the right of appeal and what action the ICO might take.
