Event Details

The Freelance Box On Tour: MBA for Translators - run in collaboration with Sarah Appleby of EMRG, is a great opportunity to find some inspiration and tried-and-tested techniques to help take your business to the next level, whatever your aims and aspirations.

Many translators and interpreters find themselves running their own businesses (very often successfully!) using their common sense, instinct and vast skillset. Nevertheless, this approach can be maximised and turn out to be even more beneficial if combined with traditional business school knowledge, that executives and managers at Master of Business Administration courses learn on a daily basis. In our workshop, we’re showcasing and presenting the most important business tools, strategies and concepts that you can apply to boost your business and make it thrive with a little strategic effort.

The workshop consists of three parts: B for business, M for marketing and S for sales. We’ll look at top business concepts in these areas from a more general perspective and then apply them to the language industry. As we like hands-on activities, you will be given a handout with practical exercises, too.

-        You will discover new ideas and ways to boost your business

-        You’ll see what top business people are being taught at MBAs

-        You’ll leave the workshop with a foundation of real business school knowledge

- A short round of business elevator pitches and presentations  (10.30am-11.15am)

- Part One: Business (11.15am-1pm) with topics related to business strategy and differentiation

1pm-2pm lunch and networking

- Part Two: Marketing  (2pm-3.15pm) with the introduction to marketing theories and concepts

- Part Three: Sales (3.15pm-4.30pm) with sales techniques and strategies for freelancers

----> HOW TO GET THERE <----

By car: There is a car park at Friar Gate Studios but there is a larger, cheaper one just over the road on Agard Street (postcode for your sat nav DE1 1DZ; cost at time of writing £2.90 per day).

The entrance to the cheaper car park is on the one-way system on the left-hand side at the city centre end of Agard Street, near the junction of the A52 and A601. We advise you to leave plenty of time to park. Spaces are limited and you may have to use one of the many other car parks around the city centre which are all signposted.

By train: Friar Gate Studios is a 25-minute walk from Derby train station.

By bus: Take bus number 6 (Unibus 6) from the train station towards Allestree. It runs every 10 minutes.

If a number of attendees will be arriving by public transport at a similar time, we can arrange for someone to meet and guide you.

On arrival at reception, please say you are here for a meeting with Sarah Appleby (our host) and sign in. Sarah will come down to meet you.

Refreshments are included (lunch) but, if you are want anything else, the café bar on the ground floor is open from 8 till 4 and has free wifi.
