The Fundraising Antidote

Welcome to The Fundraising Antidote, a series of Uncharitable events exploring anti-racism in fundraising with Cam St-Omer Donaldson and Martha Awojobi!

What’s colonialism going to do with it?

Our relationship with money is messed up. That shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who is responsible for securing income for their organisation.

The money that flows through the third sector has a long history of capitalist and colonial violence, with the wealthiest donors amassing their fortunes through extraction, exploitation. And while it might be convenient to pretend that this history has no impact on our relationship with money, or on fundraising practice, the reality is that these histories shaped the narratives that our ancestors handed down to us about money.

When we investigate power dynamics in fundraising we rightfully look to funders as the perpetrators of harm in our sector. But fundraising is not so innocent!

The spectre of unrealistic fundraising targets and ever increasing demands for growth and innovation - without a budget to match these demands - looms over fundraising teams. Urgency, perfectionism, paternalism and power hoarding is the dominant culture, and fundraisers are burning out, with many choosing to leave the sector altogether.

So what has colonialism got to do with the ‘crisis in fundraising’ and the current exodus of fundraisers? The short answer is: everything.

The long answer? You’ll have to join Cam and Martha for that.

The Fundraising Antidote kicks off with: What’s colonialism going to do with it? Expect razor sharp analysis of how fundraising is impacted by, and perpetuates, systems of oppression and how we can discover our pathway to fundraising as a mechanism for justice and liberation. And a lot of laughing - it’s Martha and Cam after all!
