The Gallery Book Lounge: The Goldfinch
Sun 11 December 2016, 14:30 – 16:00 GMT
A special return of the NGS book group for lovers of art and reading focussing on The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. Described as a haunted odyssey through present day America; it begins with a boy, Theo Decker, a thirteen-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.
Ticket includes a closer look at Carel Fabritus’ Goldfinch painting followed by discussion and tea or coffee. Please bring your own copy of the book which is also available to purchase at the NGS shop.
Please meet by the painting on the main gallery floor (Gallery 7).
