About this event
Johann Sebastian Bach’s 1741 Goldberg Variations has become an iconic monument in musical history. Written supposedly to calm the nerves of an insomniac prince, the piece is on one level simply a beautiful keyboard work, and on another, a Rubik's Cube of invention and architecture, as Tom Huizenga memorably commented.
The mix of complexity and beauty has fascinated people for 300 years, inspiring new work and responses from artists, choreographers and musicians, as well as propelling a 22-year-old unknown Canadian pianist called Glenn Gould to worldwide stardom in the 1950s.
Our star trio play Dmitri Sitkovetsky’s 1985 version of the Goldberg Variations for violin, viola and cello. The musicians will introduce the piece and tell some of the stories behind its composition.
We will share a delicious seasonal canapé supper by Hidden Kitchen, with complimentary champagne and fine wines and guaranteed sparkling company.
