This is a recording of a talk called The Golden Age of Pub-Building, by Geoff Brandwood which was recorded in 2021.

The Philharmonic in Liverpool (pictured) is the first and only Victorian pub to receive a Grade I listing. This is the crowning achievement of a glorious pub-building boom at the end of the nineteenth century.

Architectural historian Geoff Brandwood takes us on a virtual exploration of our Victorian pubs. Geoff looks at one of our great British institutions and their historic fabrics. From small country pubs and old inns, he will show how the pub as we know it was essentially a Victorian creation with a truly magnificent flowering in the closing years of the nineteenth century.

Geoff has co-authored and edited a number of books on pubs, as well has being heavily involved with the Victorian Society for many years. He has played a key role in the Campaign for Real Ale's fight to preserve historic pub interiors.

After booking a ticket, you will be given access to the recording of the event. Please ignore the event date in the listings.

This event helps raise funds for The Victorian Society - the only charity dedicated to fighting for our Victorian and Edwardian heritage. Funds raised from events and memberships allow us to employ expert caseworkers to reply to thousands of planning applications a year in our role as a statutory consultee in the planning system.

We help tackle the climate emergency by campaigning for the sensitive reuse of historic buildings to generate much lower carbon emissions than demolition and rebuild. Join us today and safeguard our unique cultural heritage for future generations! For further information, click here.
