About this event

Other

This talk follows an earlier talk on the gothic but is fine to attend as a stand alone talk. Irene will look at the developments from Romanesque to Medieval architecture and explain about the changes in architectural detail and the context for that transformation. Its refashioning through the centuries follows, as the Renaissance bequeathed the name of ‘Gothic’ to it. The Romantic era introduced the great Gothic novels, the history of which Irene explores and proceeds to the present-day idea of the ‘Goth’.

Talk 2 shows how architecture acquired the title ‘Gothic’. Irene then moves on to its influence on literature and painting in the Romantic era and finally, as Goth, to its effect on fashion and societal behaviour in the modern world.
