Description

Macmillan Cancer Support in partnership with Red Whale and
Chorley and South Ribble CCG are pleased to deliver a fully funded:

One-day cancer update course by GPs for GPs & ANPs - One place per practice as per availability.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided

Cancer is changing…
…this course helps you keep up with it.

Did you know that within the next 15 years:
• The need for cancer care will double and you will look after as many cancer survivors as diabetics?
• Shared care follow up will become the norm, secondary care will pass responsibility to us.
But a key Lancet Oncology commission paper warned that:
• “GPs are inadequately trained and resourced to manage the growing demand for cancer care in high income countries”.
• Education for GPs was one of their 5 key recommendations - we can help you to get ahead of the curve!

Is it for me?

Yes, we think this cancer course has something for everyone.
We will help you get to grips with all the nuances of this rapidly expanding area of primary care practice.
Established clinicians can use this course to bridge the gap in traditional cancer education which has focused heavily on referral and end of life care, missing out the whole journey in between.
The course covers the latest evidence and guidelines around cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment and palliative care, as well as simple ideas which can be helpful for consultations. The subjects are covered in a much greater depth than is possible on the general GP Update course and the day is designed for all clinicians - not just those with a special interest!
We will use lots of case studies throughout the day to embed your knowledge and practical ideas to put in place back at the surgery.

What will I learn?

This is a comprehensive look at the current evidence and guidance relating to all aspects of cancer care as it applies to us as clinicians.
This course is able to look in much more detail at the big picture behind the disease perhaps most feared by our patients, and let’s face it, that 1 in 2 of us will be diagnosed with over our lifetime.
We consider:
• Early diagnosis: Why is it so difficult and how we can shift the balance in favour of our patients?
• Lifestyle advice: is it really worth it?
• Cancer screening: Is early detection worth the burden of over diagnosis? How do we discuss this complex idea with patients?
• Cancer as a long-term condition – what are the needs of your patients and what are the learning needs of your team?
We also focus in detail on some tricky areas:
• Difficult to spot cancers e.g. myeloma, lymphoma, renal tract cancers, sarcoma.
• Tumour markers: When and how to use them.
• Is aspirin the new cancer wonder drug?
And a Red Whale course wouldn’t be complete without lots of practical tips to go home with:
• Identifying a relevant cancer family history and what to do with it!
• How to follow up pre-cancerous conditions like Barrett’s oesophagus.
• Identifying a teachable moment and making the most of it.
• How to do a really good cancer care review.
• Find out which cancer treatment reduces fatigue, improves bone density, mental health and quality of life – and has no side effects.
• Best practice prescribing in ‘End of life care’ including how to make sense of all the different morphine preparations and how to sort out intractable hiccups.
• Lots of case studies to embed your knowledge in a patient story – the way most of us learn best!

The GP Cancer Handbook

This is a lot to cover in one day and so delegates each receive a copy of The GP Cancer Handbook. This handbook covers the results of the most important research relevant to cancer in primary care over the last 5 years. The GP Cancer Handbook is much more than just a set of lecture notes. It covers the subjects more extensively than is possible in the one-day course and is a valuable resource for future reference and personal study.

www.gpcpd.com

Delegates on this course receive 12 months' subscription to www.gpcpd.com. Home of both the GP Update and Cancer Update Handbooks online, with three times the content of the handbooks, it allows you to capture CPD credits as you read on the site and use it in consultations! It also comes with focused learning activities to earn further CPD credits…at the end of the year you simply upload everything ready for your appraiser. Access runs from the course date (or the expiry date for current users).

About Red Whale

Clinicians want to stay up to date but the task is a formidable one. Cancer is only a part of what we see day to day (but think...in addition to all those people you diagnose with cancer, how many are afraid they have got cancer!).
That is why Red Whale is here to help. We trawl through the journals so you don’t have to, and bring you up to speed on the latest information. We set it in the context of what is known already and help to give you ideas of how to change your practice and demonstrate this for revalidation.
Red Whale is one of the leading providers of primary care medical and nursing education in the UK with over 13,000 primary care practitioners attending our courses each year. We specialise in producing courses that are evidence-based, highly relevant to everyday practice and full of actions that delegates can take away and implement immediately.

Will we tell you everything you will ever need to know? No! But we will tell you about the latest evidence, what it means in practice and give you some practical tips that you can apply in your surgery from tomorrow.

Don’t take our word for it – see what our past delegates had to say!

“A REALLY helpful course and handbook packed with easy to understand statistics dispelling many commonly held beliefs about cancer.”

“Good to know that uncertainty and risk is difficult for all of us. Great safety netting advice.”

“I liked the fact the talks were given by GPs who appreciated the breadth of GPs’ work and were able to place cancer care within the context of the many demands they face.”

“This course is a really good idea which hits the spot and it doesn’t get looked at in quite this way anywhere else.”
