A Worshipful Company of Information Technologists Event with the Real Time Club

The Great Debate: "Technology is the Enemy of Democracy"

Old Hall of Lincoln’s Inn, WC2A 3TL on Monday 24th September 2018, 18:00~23:00

 The Ethical and Spiritual Development Panel and the Government Panel of the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists, together with the Real Time Club, are sponsoring a Debate on the topical motion

 "Technology is the Enemy of Democracy"

Refreshments with wine, soft drinks and canapés will be served from 6:00 p.m. The debate will start at 7:00pm.

Rt Hon Lord Dyson, former Master of the Rolls has kindly agreed to chair the debate. 

The Speakers

For the Motion:

Proposed by Jamie Bartlett, of Demos, author of The People Vs Tech: How the internet is killing democracy (and how we save it)

Seconded by Matthew Lavy, Barrister specialising in information technology, of 4 Pump Court chambers.

Against the Motion:

Opposed by Nigel Crook, Professor of Ethical AI and Robotics, Oxford Brookes University

Seconded by Graham Taylor, Chairman of Open Forum Europe

There will be two speakers for the motion and two against, followed by speeches and questions from the floor. The Opposer and Proposer will sum-up and the debate will be gauged by a show of hands.

NB: Places are limited to 150 guests - we expect a very high turnout so to avoid disappointment book your tickets early!

Dietary Requirements: Please contact the organiser with any specific dietary requirements at least 5 days before the event.

Ticket sales end one week before the dinner due to kitchen logistics.

Refund Policy: Refunds are only made at the discretion of the organiser and where agreed will be made by cheque to the buyer within 3 days of the request being confirmed by the organiser. The ticket buyer shall request a refund directly from the event organiser by email to secretary@realtimeclub.co.uk under the following terms:
Refund requested up to 21 clear days before the day the event is due to take place: refund due 100% of total ticket cost minus a £7.50 administration fee. Refund requested between 20 and 14 clear days before the day the event is due to take place: 75% of total ticket cost minus a £7.50 administration fee. Refund requested between 13 and 3 clear days before the day the event is due to take place: 50% of total ticket cost minus a £7.50 administration fee. Refunds will be made for requests made after that date at the discretion of the Real Time Club Treasurer.

The Real Time Club was born as an IT dinner club 52 years ago this year, the Real Time Club is one of London’s foremost networking institutions. The Club’s networking events bring together people from diverse professional backgrounds with common interest in technology and society. The Club’s membership includes entrepreneurs and professionals form the tech industry, public sector, academia and finance. Every year the Real Time Club runs a series of dinners with distinguished speakers on current issues of the information age.
