Event description

Description

Marylebone and Mayfair are among London's most exclusive and desirable neighbourhoods. Originally built and developed for England's nobility in the 17th and 18th centuries, their smart terraces and elegant squares are the spectacular outcome of repeated waves of property speculation and renewal by The Great Estates - the city's historic aristocratic developer/land owners. Yet beside these genteel enclaves once stood some of London's most notorious hinterlands and slums.

Retracing the historic landscape defined by the twists and turns of the River Tyburn, this walk reveals the highs and lows of the West End's smartest residential districts. From workhouses, tenements, burial grounds and religious outlaws to batchelor flats, lost mansions, Lords and Ladies it revels in the contrasts and overlooked architectural stories to be found along one of London's great hidden riverscapes.

DEPARTS - The portico of St Marylebone Paris Church, facing Marylebone road.

A walk lead by The London Ambler - Mike Althorpe.
