The Great Game: 30,000 Miles Across Central Asia
The Great Game is thought-provoking, funny and inspirational film. Jon Beardmore’s infectious optimism and can-do attitude open up a part of the world wrongly written off as too remote, too forbidding or too damned dangerous. If this documentary doesn’t make you want to go and see for yourself what’s out there then you don’t deserve a passport. - Mark C

The costume options are endless but, to give you a flavour, the theme of The Great Game involves:
The Great Game, or Tournament of Shadows in Russia, were terms for the strategic rivalry and conflict between the British Empire and the Russian Empire for supremacy in Central Asia.
Afghanistan, as she is today, was the epicentre of this battle.
A story of war, love, death, treachery, international intrigue, and the fight for political and strategic control of Central Asia and her riches.
It involves Kings and Queens, explorers and adventurers, heroes and villains on all sides, spies and treasure hunters, all looking for power and to make their fortunes.
Which side will you choose?
The story of the film originated from my first trip to Afghanistan in 2009. As a member of the first cricket team to tour Afghanistan and play the Afghanistan national side in Kabul. First hand I witnessed the positive nature of the Afghan people and the power of sport to bring change to a challenging part of the world. I knew immediately that after this trip I would return one day.
Afghan Connection played a pivotal role behind the scenes to enable the 2009 trip to occur. It was this connection along with the wonderful work they do in Afghanistan, both in education and cricket, that has inspired the charitable arm of The Great Game film project.
I fell in love with Afghanistan on my first visit. The second visit only strengthened those feelings. Once you get to know the real Afghanistan you will too.

‘Jon, I am so impressed by your enthusiasm and energy and by your spirit and the joy you obviously brought to so many on your journey. You are an inspiration. I also love the way you are challenging perspectives of areas of the world on which people have made huge assumptions and yet know very little.’
